The Applicative Affix and Morpheme Ordering in Chichewa

چکیده
Applicativization is highly productive in a language like Chichewa. The applicative affix augments the a(rgument)-structure of a verb by bringing in an additional semantic role, which is most frequently a benefactive, instrument or locative role. We show in this paper that the structure of the word can be represented in the form of a morphology-syntax interface tree, which makes it possible to refer to not only parts of the word but also the levels of representation that are associated with each morpheme. The a-structure is of particular interest, as this is the structure that the applicative and passive affixes alter. More importantly, these morphemes alter the existing a-structure, one that is the result of the interaction between the verb root and any other a-structure-changing morpheme that precedes in morphological form the morpheme in question. With the interface tree, it is possible to make reference to an intermediate a-structure, one that is associated with a particular morpheme on the tree. Morpheme order can thus be accounted for more

VARIABLE AFFIX ORDER : GRAMMAR AND LEARNING Kevin
While affix ordering often reflects general syntactic or semantic principles, it can also be arbitrary or variable. This article develops a theory of morpheme ordering based on local morphotactic restrictions encoded as weighted bigram constraints. I examine the formal properties of morphotactic systems, including arbitrariness, nontransitivity, context-sensitivity, analogy, and variation. Seve...
متن کاملMorpheme Segmentation from Distributional Information
Morphology is the study of how meaningful components of form are combined to make complex words. Understanding how such complex words can be ‘broken apart’ into their morphological constituents is the problem of morpheme segmentation. While words that have similar meanings tend to share similar forms (e.g., run and running), many morphemes do not have transparently shared meanings. For example,...
متن کاملMorphological Templates, Headedness, and Applicatives in Barupu
The applicative construction in Barupu (Macro-Skou family from northern New Guinea) performs all the functions expected of an applicative: it is a valencyincreasing construction that adds an object to a verb, similar to the relationship between the intransitive ‘be afraid’ and the transitive ‘fear’ in English. The applicative object behaves the same as the base object of a transitive verb with ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Chinese Morphemes and Its Application to Sense and Part-Of-Speech Prediction for Chinese Compounds
Since new compounds are generated very productively in Chinese, an automatic scheme is required to predict their part-of-speeches and senses in order to automate computer language processing. To this end, we analyzed the morphosyntactic behaviors of about 4,025 morphemes (characters) in our Affix database. We found that semantic and logical compatibility are more important than syntactic constr...
متن کاملTowards a Malay Derivational Lexicon: Learning Affixes Using Expectation Maximization
We propose an unsupervised training method to guide the learning of Malay derivational morphology from a set of morphological segmentations produced by a naı̈ve morphological analyzer. Using a morphology-based language model, we first estimate the probability of a given segmentation. We train the model with EM to find the segmentation that maximizes the probability of each morpheme. We extract t...
